Close defeat at home to Middleton (May 31, 2008) In a close game on a weather affected wicket Pagham I fell six runs short of Middleton's total in a tense game at Nyetimber Lane on Saturday.
Put in by the home team, Middleton were at one stage 20-5 before Mark Hoare played a vital innings of 53 before being caught on the boundary by Matt Colburn off Sean Rutter's leg-spin. With a couple of missed catches, Middleton's tail wagged to see them all out for 123 off 48 overs.
The dismissal of Stuart Rutter in the first over gave evidence that Pagham would find batting no easier than their visitors. Only Galea, Rolls and Hales managed to spend any reasonable time at the crease and when Rolls and Hales go to within 10 of victory there was a glimmer of optimism around the ground. When Hales holed out and Rolls played a rare injudicious shot, Denyer alone could not meet the challenge of seeing off the opener Caroll. The game ended with Pagham all out and six runs short after 35 overs.
Middleton 123 (30 pts)(Mark Hoare 53 ),*Pagham 118 (10
pts). Pagham are now 5th in the table.
