2nd May: Pagham v Bognor (May 02, 2009)
Four from the Bush gives Bognor one (victory) in the hand
Bognor were asked to bat first on a pitch with a green top, and the opening bowlers Mike Hales (1-15) and Joe Metz (1-16) used the surface well. Bognor were soon in trouble at 32-3.
Luke Seward (23) battled hard for his runs against tight bowling, but when he was LBW to Sean Rutter (4-39) with the score on 55, Bognor feared the worst.
James Fallick (24) and Elliot Clarke (37) led the Bognor recovery and thanks to late innings of 18 from skipper Glenn West, Bognor managed to total 140-9 from their 53 overs, which looked at least 40 runs short and a pitch that was getting more batsman friendly.
In reply, Charith Jayaweera (0-11) and Graham Bush (4-20) kept Pagham tied down and dismissing Wayne Green (5), Chris Hayden (6) and Will Rolls (5) to leave Pagham at 34-3.
This brought ex-Bognor player, Andy Sear (28) to the crease, and he and Matt Colban (21) put on 43 for the fourth wicket and looked capable of taking Pagham close.
But when both were dismissed with the score on 77, Bognor had their tails up. Excellent spin bowling from Clarke (4-21) and Rob Willway (2-31) was picking up regular wickets and Pagham could not get their run-chase back on track.
And when Bush came back to pick up the final wicket, Pagham were all out for 100, and Bognor had won the derby by 40 runs.
