Chairman's Message (April 15, 2010)
A
Note from the Chairman
I
said in my 2009 notes that there was enough talent in the 1st
XI to push forward for honours and to a greater extent I am glad to
say I was right. From finishing 3rd
from bottom in 2008 we ended 3rd
from top last season. The most pleasing feature throughout the season
was the side’s ability to chase down scores – in fact we won more
matches batting second than batting first.
2010
should, I hope, prove to be another step upwards for all the team.
We have 3 or 4 mainline bowlers who should get 100 – 120 wickets in
the season between them. We also have 3 or 4 batsmen who should aim
to get around the 500 run mark. We are going to depend on the same
players as 2009, except for Craig Primmer. However, I am certain that
with our talent and team spirit we will prove to be one of the better
teams in Div 3.
The
club is committed to gaining Clubmark status this year. A crucial
aspect of this is the importance of supporting the junior section. I
am therefore appealing to all members, parents and carers of our
junior cricketers, to help out in any way that they can. Could you
volunteer to be a media officer and publicise the club? Would you
like to be an assistant coach? An assistant groundsman/woman?
Officiate as an umpire or scorer? Facilitate our links with schools’
cricket? Play for one of our teams? Arrange social events to increase
the appeal and activities of the club to social members? Serve teas?
Please don’t be backwards in coming forward! Just contact any of
our committee members and volunteer. We can guarantee you a very warm
welcome.
On
a personal note I shall miss my umpiring duties since all matches
will have panel umpires this season. I will particularly miss
umpiring teams like Ifield and Goring, whose players are never short
of the odd word or two!
Finally
I must again thank the Committee for all the work they do to support
the club. Also a big word of thanks to our President Roger Hammond
for his support and for his willingness to continue in the role for
2010. Very sincere thanks to all the ‘lunch sponsors’ whose
generosity is so important to our continued success.
